Tanan 300 Unmanned VTOL UAS Helicopter, France

Cassidian, an EADS company (now Airbus Defence and Space) presents its TANAN 300 new-generation compact VTOL Tactical UAS (Vertical Take-Off and Landing Tactical Unmanned Aerial System) for  wide range of missions including surveillance, reconnaissance, search-and-rescue (SAR), target acquisition, anti-smuggling, harbour protection, border patrol, anti-piracy, and convoy and VIP protection. It can also be deployed for monitoring image and communications intelligence systems, critical infrastructure and illegal traffic.
Designed in close collaboration with potential customers in order to match their specific requirements, TANAN 300 is a real ‘eye in the sky’ thanks to a full HD imagery chain and to its main payload which allows an easy switch between EO/IR (Electro-Optical and Infra-Red) high-definition cameras.

A very versatile system, TANAN 300 is designed to be flexible and also includes very high-capability payloads, such as an AIS (Automatic Identification System), an IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) system, a maritime radar, an electronic surveillance system and a direction finder, to suit all needs. The maritime radar system allows the UAS to execute search, detection and tracking missions on the coast. It can detect a target with a radar cross section (RCS) of 1m² beyond 15nm in sea state 3. The automatic identification system (AIS) identifies details of ships such as vessel size and vessel name up to 20 characters.

It is intended to carry out Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions for armies and navies, as well as civilian assignments. It can endure missions lasting over eight hours while providing full HD colour video in real time at maximum range.

The aircraft measures 4.3m in length and 1.2m in width. The diameter of the main rotor is 5m. The maximum take-off weight of the UAS is 300kg.

Developed to reliably and consistently fulfil operational requirements, the TANAN 300 is a high-performance tactical UAS, integrating a powerful, safe and highly reliable genuine diesel engine. Boasting open, modular architecture and the latest generation of proven equipment, the TANAN 300 is capable of completing missions with ranges of up to 100 nm/180 km and a 50 kg payload. The maximum and cruise speeds of the UAS are 150km/h and 100km/h respectively. The unmanned aerial vehicle can fly at a maximum altitude of up to 4,000m above sea level. It can fly to a maximum height of 3,000m above ground level and can execute missions for more than eight hours.

Packed inside a shelter or a vessel, the TANAN 300 overall system is manageable by one operator and can be deployed in unprepared areas and/or at sea. The TANAN 300 is specifically equipped for operating at temperatures of between -20°C and +50°C and in challenging weather conditions.

The ground control system is set up to reduce the operator workload to a minimum thanks to a user-friendly human-machine interface that displays all necessary information on one straightforward double screen. Moreover, information can be exported via video transmission to a remote command and control station.

The demonstrator’s first flight took place in 2010 and was launched in October 2012. The full scale model of the system was displayed at Eurosatory defence and security exhibition at Paris in June 2012. It was also exhibited during the Paris Air Show in June 2013 and the Defexpo in India in February 2014.
